Finished just in time to call it the final painting of 2016.

This painting was almost entirely done with a palette knife. I will try and get a better photograph in the next few days of both parts of this Diptych together.

There is a little bit of sinking-in happening in a few of the shadows, but I thought I would post anyway and update when I get a chance to varnish this piece.

I painted almost the entire painting using just a palette knife. I wanted to find a way to make the background yellow instead of red, but it just kept coming out looking toxically green. Next time, I'll find a way to do yellow instead.

After a full day of painting, I finished. The gold leaf mixed with the oil painting worked much better than I thought it would. Although applying the paint over the gold using a dry-brush method was more effective than using oil to thin the paint.

After Bouguereau

At a certain point I have to give up on all the subtle details that Bouguereau added to his painting. This is a smaller version, and a drawing, and many fewer hours were spent on this copy than the original.
I'm moving studio spaces in a month so there may be some distance between my posting over the next few weeks.

I know I only just posted a detail of this as a work in progress this morning, but after spending all day on the drawing I can say it is finished. It only took me a little more than 3 weeks to do this piece from start to finish, which is record time for this size of drawing. Now that I'm on the instagram I will try and post more daily / "every other day" progress shots of my work.

I've been working on adding more detail to the gold sections of the drawing. I finally found a good paper that adheres more carbon pencil on top of the gold, allowing for greater variation in the value structures in that region.
