Allison II

It has been 2 months since my last post.  I have been doing quite a bit of painting since then so I should spend some time to post my progress online.  I'll arrange to post something new every day for the next 5-6 days so that no one is flooded with images.

Here is Allison II with much more progress completed.  I just need to spend a little bit more time on the hair and I will be finished.  Quite a bit of sinking in is happening in this painting.  That means that the darks are losing their luster and appearing lighter than they otherwise should.  Varnishing at the end of the painting will solve this problem.

Here is a list of the colors that I used: Titanium White, Yellow Ocher, Venetian Red, Ultramarine Blue, and Ivory Black.

Vintage Portrait

This is a small sketch of a painting I did in the last few days while my son was napping. His naps get shorter and shorter each day so my afternoon painting time is diminishing, forcing me to work on smaller and smaller pieces.

This is mostly a black and white portrait, but I used a warm neutral for the middle light to middle values and a cool black for the middle to darks. So the darks appear more blueish, and the lights appear more of a warmish brown.

Overall I used the following paints to make this portrait: Titanium White, Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Umber, Ivory Black

Allison II

This is another painting that I am currently working on, I have three in production at the moment.

This is another painting of my cousin Allison. I never felt like I did a very accurate representation of her in the first painting. This will hopefully turn out better than Allison 1.

Colors used: Venetian Red, Titanium White, Yellow Ochre, Ivory Black, and a tiny bit of Ultramarine Blue for the eyes.

Ken Portrait

I finally had some extra time to finish this portrait.

As a side note the fixative I used on this drawing completely ruined it.  The color is gone, and all of the details are lost.  Never use Krylon products, ever.

Ken Pastel Portrait

I've spent some time lately working with Pastels and I have to say that they solve many issues that I have with painting.  I don't need to pre-mix colors, and colors are all consistent.  The downside of course is that there are only a handful of shades and values to work with in Pastel.

Deborah Varnished

I varnished this a long time ago and it was in a gallery for some time.  Now it's back, and I've moved and I can get a good photograph of it.

I'm hoping to get more time to work in my studio now that it is setup in Corvallis.  I am also hoping to get a chance to post more on the blog.

Charlie III

This is a final portrait that I did of Charlie III.  It is a 8 x 6in portrait done with the colors White, Yellow Ocher, Venetian Red, Olive Green, and Burnt Umber.

Charlie II - In progress detail

I've been working on this painting for awhile, but I've been unable to photograph or post images until now.  Here is my painting of Charlie II.  It will be a 24 x 16 portrait, and this is just a detail of the portrait.

Megan Red Chalk

Here is another red chalk drawing that I completed recently.  I just forgot to post it when I finished it a couple of weeks ago.

It's an 11x14 in drawing done in red and white chalk.  Let me know if you have any questions.

Charlie Sketch

I'm finally starting a new painting.  I spent a little extra time on the sketch for this one and it turned out pretty good (other than the offset eyes of course.)

I only used a couple of colors: Yellow Ochre, Venetian Red, Olive Green, Burnt Umber, and White.
